392nd Bomb Group

Target: Plauen - 5 April 1945 - Mission #274

This deep target in Bavaria was selected to aid the advancing Russian troops in the area. The 392nd was slated for (10) crews which were briefed at 0330 hours with the lead ship taking off at 0645. Target weather was obscured with the release of (224) 150# bombs being made by H2X, unobserved. No fighters or flak were encountered as the returning ships recovered safely at Wendling about 1505. It was on this day that new activities began at the base - ones which brought speculation that as the war appeared to be winding down and movement of the Group was near. These rumors were based on a series of "cargo" missions which began to A-84 in Belgium to bring back personnel and supplies of a fighter group to England. Also, the Commanders of two Squadrons, Major Sather of the 577th and Major Keilman of the 579th had flown (10) hour local missions with passengers and baggage. On this date, Major Sather had flown a ‘test hop’ with (53) personnel and on the 7th, Major Keilman flew a similar sortie with (45) men, each with (65) pounds of luggage.
