13 February 1944 Mission #37 Target: NoBall #22 and #62

On the evening before, a Group stand-down had been ordered and a station dance was held with the comment that "a good time was had by all". Early on the 13th the scheduled stand-down was interrupted by a mission warning and a hurried briefing of (26) aircrews. Aircraft took off beginning at 1225 hours with the 579th leading. Bombing results on these two targets were excellent with both runs visual and (100) percent of all (276) 500# GP weapons impacting within 2000 ft. of briefed aiming points. Enemy opposition was encountered in the form of AA fire, (15) aircraft returning with flak battle damage with one man wounded. After this mission, a bad weather period settled in over East Anglia with low overcasts, snow and poor visibility’s which curtailed bomber operations. During the period, the Group was visited by General Hodges of the 2nd Bombardment Division and General Leon Johnson, the 14th Combat Wing Commander, on an inspection tour. The Group units and activities reportedly "passed inspection with flying colors" on 17 February.

CASUALTIES NOT LISTED IN MACR

S/SGT Dickison, William G. (G) 579th KIA

Sgt. Dickison was flying with Lt. Kubale’s aircrew on this mission day to Noball targets #22 and #62 in France. No circumstance surrounding his death is known, however, this aircrew did return safely to Wendling after the mission which lends a mystery to the exact fate of Sgt. Dickison because he is listed on the WALL OF THE MISSING at the U.S. National Cemetery, CAMBRIDGE, England, with no Grave location cited. Given this fact, it is presumed that he was lost somewhere enroute having bailed out of the Kubale aircraft, location unknown. His awards were one Air Medal and the Purple Heart. His home of record was New York State.
