Mission #83 Target: Mulhouse (Briefed) / Belfort (Struck)

On the day before, the Group had put up a maximum effort against an airfield at Diepholtz only to have the mission scrubbed after becoming airborne because of extremely poor assembly weather over England. On this date, however, an airfield in southern Germany near the Swiss border was chosen. At 0630 hours, (23) aircrews were briefed with the 579th and 576th selected to lead the effort. The Bombardiers were Lieutenants Cetin and Hadecka. As take-offs began at 1030 hours, a near fatal accident was averted by quick thinking of the aircrew in the lead ship #41-29552, Bronko Nagurski, piloted by Lieutenant Lotterhos with Command Pilot, Major Keilman, when the nose wheel collapsed and the ship nosed in just off the runway. Fortunately, only one man was slightly injured. The Group put (19) aircraft over the target but was unable to locate the primary, releasing on Belfort instead with poor results after dropping (60) 1000# GP bombs. The second squadron did not bomb and returned with their weapons. No enemy aircraft were engaged and flak was negligible. Approximately 20-25 single-engine fighters were sighted, however. The mission returned safely around 1430 hours with one ship battle damaged.
