Missions #111 & #112 Targets: Melun & Tours A/Fs

Mission #111     Target: Melun A/F

This target was an airfield just north of the town. At 0630 (11) crews were briefed with the most incomplete package of materials which was received in the Field Order. Take-offs were delayed for weather but at 1100 hours all ships launched. The formation was GH ship led with the Groupís crews instructed to bomb visually if at all possible. The target weather was again poor with 10/10th undercast and all (132) weapons were brought home with landing around 1700 hours. No enema reaction was encountered other than inaccurate flak fire.

Mission #112     Target: Tours A/F

For the second mission this date, the airfield at Tours was assigned to the Group, putting up (12 sorties against it. At 1500 these crews were briefed and take-offs commenced at 1800 hours. Again the crews were instructed to bomb visually if at all possible. The Group was led by the 578th with Captain Weiland, the Group Bombardier, in the lead ship. During the bomb run, flak was quite heavy and the lead ship experienced a Sperry A-5 Autopilot/Bombing system malfunction. The Deputy Lead ship was hit by AA fire also, starting a fire, and could not salvage the bomb run. As a result, the (132) 100# bombs were salvoed in the target area with all ships following suit on the Deputy Lead. Bombing results were poor, the weapons landing wide of the briefed MPI. Despite heavy AA fire and the battle damage of (8) Liberators, all ships returned safely to base, landing around midnight.
