17 October 1944 Mission #186 Target: Cologne

The primary target was the Buerhusen factory in north Cologne. Again Captain Weiland was the Lead Bombardier in a 576th ship. General briefings were held at 0245 and 0400 hours for 24 aircrews. At 0650, all began take-offs with 23 going over the PFF and hitting the secondary target - the marshalling yards. Impacts of the (284) 500# GPs were not observed because of 10/10ths cloud cover. Once more no fighters were seen but AA fire was heavy and accurate. Eleven bombers were battle damaged, but fortunately no aircrews were lost or casualties suffered. One ship from the 576th with Lieutenant D. L. Sommers' crew was forced to land at Brussels on return; two engines needed changing. All other Liberators returned around 1255 hours.
