General Briefing was held 0330-0400 but the briefed target was Brunswick. Lead crews were briefed late in the evening before as was the procedure provided the mission warning orders were received in time. Eighteen (18) aircrews took off with the 577th Squadron leading and Captain Weiland as lead Bombardier. With the mission aircraft already over Germany, the mission was recalled by higher headquarters because all English base weather was going below recovery minimums. Being resourceful, the Group elected to bomb a T/O of Meppen with good results. Enemy reaction was moderate with (10) single and twin-engine fighters being engaged but the unit suffered no losses to flak or fighters. One aircraft was lost on crash landing at home station but no injuries resulted and this ship was damaged by flak. A total of (121) 500# GP bombs were released on target. Aircraft began recovery around 1600 hours along with (11) B-17s whose bases were closed down due to bad weather.
According to the 392nd BG history, "Our ships landed first around 1600. Following them 11 B-17's landed, 6 from the 401st B.G., four from the 351st B.G., and one from the 303rd B.G. All these crews were interrogated and reports sent to their bases. All crews were fed. Half of them returned to their bases by truck while skeleton crews remained to fly their ships home the next day. Our own losses and claims were nil, but the B-17 groups, having more distant targets, had suffered heavily."
