The Group was first alerted at 1000 hours and pre-briefed for a target of Brussels. At the regular briefing, the target was changed to the marshalling yards at Liege, Belgium. General briefing was held at 1315 hours for 24 aircrews. The lead was split between the 579th and 576th Squadrons with 1/Lt Lieutenants William F. Cetin and George J. Jackson the respective Bombardiers. At 1446 hours, the aircraft took off, each carrying eight 1000-pound GP bombs and 2,100 gallons of fuel.
Due to haze and clouds in the target area, no bombs were released. Being inadvisable to make a second run due to the interference of other Wings, the Group looked for a secondary target. Per the mission order, the "secondary and last resort" target was "any airdrome in occupied countries not near a built up area." None was located, so all bombs were brought back to base.
No enemy aircraft were encountered but flak was moderate and fairly accurate causing minor battle damage to nine Liberators. In the 579th, S/Sgt Luell E. Ward in ship #789 was wounded by flying metal and Plexiglas from the barrage at the target. All aircraft returned safely, landing around 1815 hours.
