The Ford factory in the northwest suburbs of the city, located on the Rhine River was assigned as the aiming point for this mission. Captain Weiland, the Group Bombardier, was scheduled in the leading 578th aircraft. At 0330 and 0445 hours, (30) crews were given general briefings and at 0650 (28) Group ships began take-off. Cloud cover over target again impeded good bombing but (6) crews did manage to release on the primary and the rail yards with fairly good results. The remaining ships dropped on a Target of Opportunity by PFF some ten miles south-south east of the briefed target. A total of (260) 500# GPs were released in these target areas with the preponderance being unobserved due to weather. Again no fighters were seen but flak was intense and accurate. Fortunately, no aircrews were lost but (1) bomber was severely damaged over target and it was thought to have gone down in the target area. This ship from the 577th, #415, with Lieutenant Henry T. Holmes’ crew was last seen going in but under control over the target. No chutes were observed. The crew was able to land their crippled bomber at emergency field 56 right outside of Brussels. The #1 and #4 engines were out; the ship landed on the runway but then ran off the runway. No one was hurt but the plane had to be salvaged. The crew was returned to the unit on the 17th. Two (2) other bombers were damaged such that their crews were forced to make emergency landings at Woodbridge, England. These were ship #448 with Lieutenant N. J. Wick’s crew of the 579th and #623 with Lieutenant H. K. Porter’s crew, also from the same Squadron. One officer crew member from Lieutenant Buaas’ crew of the 577th was also wounded. All remaining ships returned by 1250 hours.
