392nd Bomb Group

Target: Eschweiler - 16 November 1944 - Mission #201

A five day stand down for poor weather intervened after the 200th mission, one which was welcome by aircrews and ground personnel alike. On this date, the entire Eighth Air Force was committed in support of Allied troops in and around Aachen. The 392nd’s target was in Section P-3, a crossing northeast of Mischweiler, Holland. General briefings were conducted for (38) aircrews at 0515 an 0640 and at 0930 hours (37) were dispatched. At 1238, the Group was over target but the 44th Bomb Group slid underneath of the formation, thus, hindering the lead ship’s run. All (1014) 260# frag bombs hit 4 1/2 - 5 miles over the MPI. Upon return, weather was poor over England making the 2nd Bomb Division recovery hazardous. The entire Group formation of (37) aircraft was diverted to Benson airfield, all returning on the afternoon of the 18th.

On 18 Nov 1944, this teletype was received at the 392nd BG:

"The following message from the Commanding General, Eighth Air Force will be brought to the personal attention of all members of your command. Quote, On November sixteenth, the Eighth Air Force performed one of its most outstanding operations. The Force took off under extremely adverse base weather conditions and successfully attacked targets on the immediate front of our ground troops almost exclusively by instrument technique with very good results. Ground commanders were highly pleased and report all bombs on or near the targets, with no injuries to friendly troops. It was a difficult task well done and I commend you for the capable and efficient manner in which it was conducted. Signed Doolittle. Unquote. I add my personal congratulations to all members of this division for the vital role performed in this mission and am proud of your demonstrated ability to cope with extremely unfavorable weather conditions.

[signed] Kepner"

This teletype was also received at the 392nd:

"Following message has been received from CG Eighth AF. Quote. It is a pleasure to forward message from the CG 104th Infantry Division: Doughboys thank you for a fine job. Certainly appreciated it. Please inform all participants. [signed] Terry Allen. Such a message typifies the teamwork which is doing so much to knock out our common enemy. [signed] Doolittle. Unquote. This is a fine tribute to the effectiveness of our tactical bombing on 16 November from the men who are slogging it out on the ground and another demonstration of the ability of the Air Forces to master difficult problems. My congratulations to all of you on this highly successful mission.

[signed] Kepner"
